Which shaft flex for your swing speed?
Flex is the stiffness of your club's shaft. If it doesn't match your swing, you lose distance and consistency. Driver swing speed is the best starting point for choosing it, but it is not the only criterion: tempo, transition and the shaft itself also matter. We start with the speed-to-flex correspondence table, then look at what refines it.
The recommended flex for your swing speed
Speed measured at the driver. Drive distances are indicative and are there to help you find your range if you don't have access to a radar.

A nuance worth noting: among amateurs, driver speed often falls between 135 and 145 km/h. The 150 km/h (93 mph) measured by TrackMan already corresponds to a player who hits relatively hard, as golfers who use a radar tend to swing faster than the average club golfer. Assess yourself honestly, without overestimating your speed.
Speed is only a starting point
The table above gives the right ballpark, but a modern fitting looks at much more than speed alone. Two players at the same speed may need different flex options, depending on:
- Tempo and transition. An aggressive swing loads the shaft more violently: it may justify a stiffer flex, even at average speed. A smooth swing points in the other direction.
- The release point. The moment at which you hinge and then release your wrists changes the load on the shaft.
- Shaft weight and profile. A low, mid or high kick point changes the feel and trajectory at the same flex.
The table is a starting point; to make a definitive choice, nothing beats a radar session with several shafts.
How to find out your swing speed
Three ways to find it, from most to least accurate:
- With a radar (TrackMan, launch monitor in a shop or at the range): the most accurate measurement, ideal before a purchase.
- From your drive distance: use the "indicative distance" column in the table above to work back to your speed.

Graphite or steel: the other shaft choice
Flex is not the only shaft parameter. Material also matters: graphite is lighter, it helps gain swing speed, it is the standard on drivers and fairway woods and a great ally for slow to moderate swings. Steel is heavier and more consistent, therefore more controllable, and is found mainly on the irons of faster players. At the same speed, switching to graphite can add a few mph, and therefore a little distance.
Flex follows the same logic as ball compression
Matching flex to your swing speed is exactly the same reflex you should have for your ball: compression must match your swing, otherwise you lose distance. Slow swing, soft flex and low compression ball; fast swing, stiff flex and high compression ball. Frequently asked questions
What happens if my flex is not suited to me?+
A poorly fitted shaft costs you distance and consistency above all. Too stiff for your speed, it doesn't load enough: the ball tends to fly lower and you lose yards. Too flexible for a fast swing, it deforms too much and the trajectory becomes less predictable. On the other hand, the exact direction (right or left) depends mainly on your swing path, face angle and technique, not solely on the flex: don't rely on a flex change to fix a slice or a hook.
I'm between two flex options, which should I choose?+
It depends on your tempo, not just your speed. With a smooth swing, the softer of the two remains playable and retains distance. But an athletic player with an aggressive tempo often benefits from taking the stiffer option, even at average speed, because they load the shaft more violently. If in real doubt, a radar session with both flex options will settle it in a few balls.
Graphite or steel for my irons?+
Graphite if you are looking for speed and lightness, or if you have a moderate swing or joint pain. Steel if you swing fast and prioritise control and consistency. Many players use graphite on the driver and fairway woods, steel on the irons: it is a solid default compromise.
