The same ball model won't add distance for every golfer. The real lever is matching the ball's compression to your swing speed. By definition, your golf level will have a significant impact on your ball speed and distance.
With a slow swing, a low-compression ball deforms more at impact and returns more energy. With a fast swing, the effect reverses and a high compression takes the advantage. For the full choice by level, see our guide how to choose your golf ball: here, we focus on distance only.
What determines the distance of a golf ball
Three factors matter for distance; the rest is secondary.
- Compression. This is the main lever. Low for slow swings, high for fast swings. The detailed figures by model are in our compression comparison chart.
- Driver spin. Less spin off the tee means a flatter trajectory and more roll. 2-piece balls naturally spin less with the driver; premium multi-layer balls achieve this too, through their intermediate layers designed to reduce spin.
- Construction. A 2-piece ball with a soft core remains the distance choice for the average golfer. But at high swing speeds (generally above 100 mph), a premium multi-layer ball will often go further than a 2-piece: its firm inner core and mantle reduce driver spin and optimise launch angle at high speed, while the soft urethane cover maintains greenside grip.

Two reading notes. The compression of the same model can vary from one generation to the next: the Srixon Q-Star Tour is rated between 70 and 75 depending on the year, hence the range. And the Wilson Ultra is a special case: it's a 2-piece distance-oriented ball, but its high compression requires a fast swing to deliver its best.

How many metres you can expect, based on your swing speed

Reference points: the average male amateur swings around 93 mph (approximately 196 m of drive), a senior between 80 and 90 mph, an amateur woman between 75 and 80 mph. If your swing is at or below the amateur average, your distance lever is low compression, not the pros' ball.
Frequently asked questions
Which golf ball should you use to gain distance with a slow swing?
Low compression, and nothing else. With a slow swing, you can't compress a hard ball: the energy isn't returned and you lose metres there. The Wilson DX2 Soft (compression 29) is the prime example. If you want to keep control around the greens, the Srixon AD333 (compression 68) is the right compromise.
Does a hard ball go further?
No, and for most amateurs it's actually the opposite. A hard ball only flies far if you swing fast enough to compress it. Below that threshold, it stays rigid at impact and you lose distance. Hence the importance of choosing your ball based on your swing speed, not by category.
Do used golf balls lose distance?
No. Distance comes from the ball's internal structure: compression and the core don't change during refurbishment. A graded ball flies like a new one; only the cosmetic appearance changes (and at second-hand prices, you can test several models before deciding).
How do I find out my swing speed?
