Choosing the right ball is essential, as different models offer varying performance. You need to find the one that suits you, to get used to its backspin, the technologies it incorporates, and its behaviour in flight. You should then stick with the golf ball model that works for you in order to improve your scores on the course.
Form an opinion based on several criteria: ball speed, spin, length, club speed
To choose the ball that matches your playing style and level, several criteria can be taken into account.
-
Ball flight: height of the ball in flight
-
Ball speed: the speed at which the ball travels along the course, measured in m/s. The ball compression is one of the elements that most impacts speed.
-
Length: number of metres covered by the ball, including the roll from the golfer's position.
-
Spin (rotation speed): rotation of the ball in the air. The greater the spin, the more the ball will tend to rise and stay in the air. However, too much backspin can increase the height excessively, reducing the distance covered and affecting the trajectory (Magnus effect).
- Club speed: also known as "clubhead speed", refers to the speed at which the club head moves just before making contact with the ball, influencing the measured performance. The speed in both long and short game is influenced by the golfer's level and technique, of course.
