Who qualifies for the US Open golf tournament?
One of the most anticipated tournaments of the year is open to all, Americans and international players alike. To qualify, preliminary qualifying rounds are held on various courses across the United States and internationally.
However, there is automatic qualification for players who are:
- Those who won the tournament in the last 10 editions;
- The winners of the last five major tournaments;
- Those ranked in the top 50 before the start of the tournament.
The format and course of the tournament
Tournament format:
Stroke play over 72 holes. The tournament takes place over four consecutive days, with each player completing 18 holes per day, for a total of 72 holes.
Cut after 36 holes:
After the first two rounds, a "cut" is made to determine which players will continue in the competition.
Traditionally, the top 60 players, including ties, qualify for the final two rounds.

Dates of the 2025 US Open golf tournament
The US Open competition will take place from 12 to 15 June 2025 and will be played on one of the oldest golf courses in America, Oakmont Country Club (Pennsylvania), founded in 1903 (122 years ago).
The last time the professionals on the circuit played on the greens of Oakmont during a US Open was in 2016, when Dustin Johnson claimed the title.
